“Vi dico, monaci, che ci sono due persone che non è facile ripagare. Chi sono queste due persone? Vostra madre e vostro padre. Anche se portaste vostra madre su una spalla e vostro padre sull’altra spalla per 100 anni, e vi prendeste cura ungendo, massaggiando, facendogli il bagno e sfregando le loro membra, e se dovessero defecare e urinare proprio lì [sulle vostre spalle], non ripaghereste i vostri genitori in questo modo. Se doveste conferire a vostra madre e vostro padre il dominio assoluto su questa grande terra, ricca dei sette tesori, non ripaghereste i vostri genitori in questo modo. Perché? Madre e padre fanno molto per i loro figli. Si prendono cura di loro, li nutrono, li introducono in questo mondo. Ma chiunque risvegli sua madre e suo padre increduli e li stabilisca nella fede; risvegli sua madre e suo padre non virtuosi e li stabilisca nella virtù; risvegli sua madre e suo padre avari e li stabilisca nella generosità; risvegli sua madre e suo padre ignoranti e li stabilisca nella conoscenza: costui ripaga completamente sua madre e suo padre.” (DISCORSO DEL BUDDHA)
RIFLESSIONE
Se desideri fare un dono prezioso, lavora innanzitutto su te stesso, perché è da lì che sorge il dono più grande per te e per gli altri. In nessuno sveglierai la fede se sei materialista; non potrai infondere virtù se sei vizioso; non puoi trasmettere generosità se sei avaro; non puoi condividere conoscenza nell’ignoranza…

“I tell you, monks, there are two people who are not easy to repay. Which two? Your mother & father. Even if you were to carry your mother on one shoulder & your father on the other shoulder for 100 years, and were to look after them by anointing, massaging, bathing, & rubbing their limbs, and they were to defecate & urinate right there [on your shoulders], you would not in that way pay or repay your parents. If you were to establish your mother & father in absolute sovereignty over this great earth, abounding in the seven treasures, you would not in that way pay or repay your parents. Why is that? Mother & father do much for their children. They care for them, they nourish them, they introduce them to this world. But anyone who rouses his unbelieving mother & father, settles & establishes them in conviction; rouses his unvirtuous mother & father, settles & establishes them in virtue; rouses his stingy mother & father, settles & establishes them in generosity; rouses his foolish mother & father, settles & establishes them in discernment: To this extent one pays & repays one’s mother & father.” (SPEECH OF THE BUDDHA)
REFLECTION
If you want to give a precious gift, work on yourself first, because it is from there that the greatest gift for you and for others arises. You will awaken faith in no one if you are materialistic; you will not be able to instill virtue if you are vicious; you cannot convey generosity if you are stingy; you cannot share knowledge in ignorance…
